Introduction

To be New Zealand's leading supplier of future proofed sustainable world-class designs
that create ‘inspirational' places to work and live

With over 30 years of experience in dealing with the International furniture and interior fit out supply sector, Alan and Jeanne Bertenshaw the co-owners of Matisse have forged a reputation unique in New Zealand with the world's leading manufacturers and designers of quality contemporary furniture for the home and office as well as kitchens, wardrobes and bathrooms.

In order to maintain our world-class reputation, Matisse is committed to only working with manufacturers that produce an all-encompassing level of quality and superior design, providing the highest levels of comfort and unmatched durability over time.

Matisse Quality Square

To ensure that these high standards are maintained, we developed the four principles of longevity and sustainability that all our international suppliers must strictly adhere to:
  1. Quality of Manufacturing
  2. Quality and Innovation of Raw Materials
  3. Ecological Sensitivity
  4. Quality of Design
These principles dictate that all products supplied by Matisse will stand the test of time and that their lifetime and relevance can be measured in decades rather than years or months. For example, the Eames Lounge chair and Ottoman, designed 50 years ago will be passed on from generation to generation and will always be a sought after design classic.

This illustrates the importance of world class design as a vital cornerstone in the quest for longevity and sustainability. Set alongside the other three cornerstones of manufacturing excellence, innovative raw materials and ecological sensitivity, this quality focus is known as the Matisse Quality Square.

Future Proofing

With 30 years of working hand-in-hand with our customers, the design community and our suppliers, we realise the powerful impact and importance of ‘place' in the community.

We recognise the importance of offering a ‘future proofed' solution and a new range of services that allow our customer's investment to evolve. Future proofing at Matisse means a product can only be considered acceptable if it can last generations rather than years. To do this it must become a design icon or classic, be built to last, utilise sustainable resources, and be thought of as an investment, not just a luxury.

This has transformed Matisse from a traditional furniture dealer to a long-term partner committed to the customers we serve.

When you work with Matisse, you are selecting a partner to not only provide you with quality furniture, but to also assist you in managing your facilities. With our experience, sound reputation and proven track record, we know that our capabilities will help you to future proof your home or office, but more importantly create an "inspirational" place for you to work and live.

Our Stance on the Environment

Matisse is committed to achieving excellence in all our environmental practices. This is reflected in our environmental objective to; "seek environmental improvements in all aspects of our business including energy efficiency enhancements and waste reduction opportunities across our business"

Guiding Principals for our company:

Reduce - Purchases shall only be made when required and of the amount needed, purchases that reduce the use of materials/resources will be favoured; for example products that have minimal packaging or printers that print double sided.

Reuse - Using the same item more than once and extending the useful life of products and equipment via appropriate maintenance, ensure all products are durable, have a long service life and are easy to maintain and upgrade.

Recycle - Purchase products that are recycled or re-manufactured or contain recycled materials, or that can be recycled or re-manufactured.

Revive - If you purchase your furniture from Matisse we will always want it back if you ever decide to relinquish it. We will find a new home or office to cherish it or put it to productive use for as long as possible. We do not want to see our furniture consigned to the landfill.

Client Portfolio

When you select Matisse as your preferred furnishing supplier, you are following some of New Zealand's leading private and public organisations.

Matisse is proud to have supported innovative firms such as Vodafone, Bendon, Fisher & Paykel, Fonterra, Air New Zealand, KPMG, Chapman Tripp and the Lotteries Commission, in the refurbishment of their work spaces.

For Vodafone's revolutionary new V-Space, the firm wanted to transform itself into a role model of mobility. In order to accomplish this Vodafone knew that its technology, work practices, and furniture would all play an important role in achieving this, and that Matisse was the perfect furnishing supplier for the job.

Fonterra needed to merge its 21 service and sales centres into one retrofitted office, but wanted to create a stimulating yet functional new home for 175 staff. To ensure the new workplaces reflected the business values, yet also met budget and functional imperatives, Fonterra looked no further than Matisse.

With their new Auckland office, Bendon wanted to create a workplace that could convey its design-driven philosophy, inject the glamour of the fashion industry and feel international, rather than local in character. To achieve this vision, Bendon partnered with Matisse for both product offering and ongoing support.

"This space is a metaphor for who we want to be" says Stephan Preston, Bendon's CEO. "It's a constant reminder that we are a professional, fashionable company. While the aesthetics are great, we were also able to be sensible about the money. A cool combination."
