40/4

Designed by David Rowland

1964

Manufactured by Howe

Designed by David Rowland in 1964, the 40/4 chair solved the universal problem of space starved facilities that must be flexible with its impressive ability to be stacked up to 15 chairs on the ground and up to 160 on a special trolley. It is often imitated but never rivalled.

The chair has an elegant sculptural design and is well known for its durability and comfort. Made with a steel rod frame and a gently contoured seat and back it is available in a hard wearing polyamide, a range of veneers and can also be upholstered in fabric or leather.

Functional and extremely space economical the 40/4 chair is ideal for any multi-purpose space that requires a chair that is simple to use and store. 40 chairs stack on a trolley in a height of 4ft - 144cmH. Chairs also only weight 5.8kg.

40/4 chairs are unsurpassed in stackability. 40 chairs nest quickly and neatly in a stack of just 4 feet of height to give 40/4 its name. With a slight lift and tilt, each chair slides into place easily and rests solidly in the stack.

No lifting to remove, just slide off. An entire auditorium or meeting room can be set up or taken down, with a minimum of labour in a short period of time.

Ganged in solid, rigid rows which do not come apart when handled, chairs may be stacked in a minimum of time - up to four chairs linked together - to store 160 on a dolly in only 1.68 square metres of floor space. This makes it easy to remove chairs for storage. Not only do you save space, but also labour and time when installing pre-ganged chairs in a room.

40/4 has an excellent design that has given inspiration to so many copy products around the world. Nothing is extraneous - all is for a purpose, and is maybe the most important contract chair design of the 20th century. 40/4 is unsurpassed in its stacking/handling capability.

Stacking:

Up to 15 chairs can stack without a dolly when transport is not required, which is ideal for small seating applications. Space-saving capacity exceeds all other stacking and folding chairs on the market.

The armchair version can stack up to 25 chairs in height on dolly.

Dollies:

Our specially designed dollies (1, 2, 3 or 4 place units), is also suitable for the plastic version:

· single dolly = up to 40 chairs

· double dolly = up to 80 chairs

· triple dolly = up to 120 chairs

· quadruple dolly = up to 160 chairs

Unsurpassed stacking and handling capacity:

= 0.47 sq. metres floor space
= 0.94 sq. metres floor space
= 1.40 sq. metres floor space
= 1.87 sq. metres floor space

Low weight ensures easy handling. Low stacking density ensures easy storage.

Linking:

Side chair linking system is part of the frame, which is a strong, efficient linking method without inconvenient extra parts that tend to be misplaced.

Solid 3-point connection is a result of 2 integral frame joints plus an interlocking foot glide joining point.

Frame finish options allow choice of coloured powder coating, chrome, or satin chrome.

Moulded to body's natural contours

Thin triple curved plywood bended seat and back follow the original metal 40/4 giving perfect ergonomic support while being aesthetically pleasing.

The clear lacquered, sanded surface veneer or stained veneer on both sides of seat and back provide a surface with an elegant look.

Upholstery with fabric, microfibre, leather or vinyl ensures design flexibility, providing solutions for different environments whether traditional or contemporary.

Extra thick fire-retardant cushioning available if needed for even more comfort.

40/4 does not restrict blood circulation and so prevents undue pressure under the thighs.
