Our Latest Award Winning Kitchen Design | A Clean Lined Design, Inspired By Nature

The kitchen is located in Governors Bay, nestled into the Port Hills, 20 minutes from Christchurch’s city centre. The owners sought an organic aesthetic to complement the rugged bush surroundings and the exterior of the home finished in timber, stone and copper. It was important that the kitchen be driven by function and to have a "measured elegant feel"
says Maria Pomeroy of Matisse Christchurch.

The “Gamma” collection from Arclinea was the perfect fit to complement the brief. The seamless aesthetic of “Gamma” features clean lines and incorporates recessed handles into the structure of the bench top. Long cabinet drawers were chosen to maximise storage and to accentuate the kitchen’s linear lines. Floating shelves help achieve the elegant, Japanese feel the clients loved and provide beautiful spaces for display.

Above - The beautiful outlook from the kitchen bench of Governors Bay and the Port Hills.

Contrasting the generous use of timber, with soft matt black surfaces in defined areas on the island and back wall, helped avoid a strictly symmetrical look. Stainless steel on the back working bench and splashbacks adds practicality and an element of reflection and light to the overall design.

The “Armour” finish, in Nero from Arclinea, is tactile and warm and has the benefit of absorbing light. This adds a softness to the colour palette during the day and at night when lighting comes into play.” says Maria Pomeroy of Matisse Christchurch.

Milan Design Week 2018 Part 2 - Cassina, ClassiCon and BD Barcelona Highlights

Cassina

The Cassina showroom in Milan is a place of ideas, experimentation and innovation. Fifty years after it first opened, the showroom has been extended and remodelled by the likes of Mario Bellini, Vico Magistretti and Achille Castiglioni to name a few. Now Cassina introduces Patricia Urquiola's 2018 remodel as a new chapter where the collection 'This Will Be the Space' is on show. Patricia Urquiola has designed a sculptural staircase leading to the first floor by passing through the ‘cupola’ dome, the very heart of the showroom. Patricia proudly sits on the landing of the staircase on the Feltri Armchair designed by Gaetano Pesce.

The latest sofa designed by Patricia Urquiola for Cassina is the Bowy Sofa a modular sofa with soft and welcoming curves that can be composed in a playful way. Circular, semi-circular and rectangular shapes alternate dynamically to create a play of volumes and a graphic silhouette.

Cassina presents the Maralunga 40-Maxi sofa, designed by Vico Magistretti in 1973, in a version with a 35% wider and 10% deeper seat. Maralunga 40-Maxi is pure temptation, an invitation to take the weight off your feet, lie back and relax into its even softer and more welcoming form.

ClassiCon

ClassiCon featured a range of new products at Salone del Mobile, including the Aërias by Tilla Goldberg and Ippolito Fleitz Group. The design is a combination of age old traditional weaving realised in elegant leather and high-tech CNC milled wood. The familiar pattern of the Vienna wickerwork is reinterpreted on a larger scale with leather as the weaving material. Aërias has been awarded winner by Stylepark Selected Salone del Mobile 2018.

The Pli Table (above) presents itself with a selection of tabletops in spectacular marble patterns and colours. The Pli table was a winner of Wallpaper* Magazine’s Design Awards 2018.The Pegasus Home Desk designed by Ippolito Fleitz and Tilla Goldberg is now available in new colours including leather in khaki and body in nightblue (below).

BD Barcelona

Bd Barcelona presented a range of innovative designs, a highlight being the Grasso collection designed by Stephen Burks. The collection includes an armchair, stools and ceramic designs available in a range of colour and textile options.

Stephen Burks’ work is inspired by the culture and traditional handcrafts of Dakar. The visual result sits well with BD Barcelona’s long tradition of supporting adventurous artistic expression.

The ceramics within the Grasso Collection push the boundaries of the furniture collection further with a complete organic yet structured form. The ribbing forms a restraint much like the framing of the stools and armchair designs.

Milan Design Week 2018 Part 1 | B&B Italia, Maxalto, Rimadesio and Moroso Highlights

The 2018 Salone del Mobile provided a feast of the world's latest designs showcasing our favourite brands at Matisse. Over the next few weeks we will provide you with the latest design news from the Fair.

B&B Italia

B&B Italia presented Walks of Design at Salone del Mobile, a creative journey across two distinct contexts of interior and outdoor settings.

"Bay is a seating collection of generously proportioned objects which cradle the body in its soft and well defined volumes. A sofa in two sizes, an armchair and a high-backed armchair, perfect for relaxation and informal gatherings, with a solid yet airy interwoven structure.” Doshi Levien present Bay, their new 2018 design for B&B Italia Outdoor.

The B&B Atoll seating system designed by Antonio Citterio is a new modular system, a refined expression of a balanced aesthetic form and a decisive contemporary style.

"B&B Atoll is a versatile collection that reinterprets traditional elements, like the bolster, associating them with a sleek, refined structure that fits smoothly into the contemporary language. It is versatile because it can be used in a wide range of settings, from the most formal, when partnered with the armchairs, to informal situations. This is thanks to the possibility of creating an L-shaped configuration with the daybed as end element"

Maxalto

"After 25 years of presenting products that use artisanal materials and processes, I felt the need to offer a 'moulded' piece, a chair with a fusion structure, thanks to a significant industrial investment by the company. At the same time, I wanted it to be part of the Maxalto collection. Caratos is absolutely contemporary, but recalls some twentieth century objects. It echoes the idea of bronze through a 'full' opaque finishing that absorbs light, and the great quality of the leather upholstery, giving it a saddlery look"  Antonio Citterio

Rimadesio

Rimadesio exhibited a stage for story telling based on solid proposals and solutions developed through a year of designing and testing. They presented new designs rich in details and exclusive finishings for a balanced proposal between architectural and furniture design, technical evolution and stylistic research.

Rimadesio have updated the Zenit system with coordinated combinations of cabinetry in aluminium bronze and brand new elm melamine, castoro leather and brown melamine internal drawers.

Dress Bold is now available in a material back panel version with exclusive luxurious fabrics in 6 different colours. All systems designed by Giuseppe Bavuso.

Moroso

Patricia Urquiola configured an interdisciplinary and intercultural exhibition space for Moroso to celebrate the concept of Material and Art and to showcase their latest designs.

The new Chamfer Sofa celebrates twenty years of the Moroso and Patricia Urquiola collaboration.
"Discussing this anniversary with Patrizia Moroso, for our twenty-year work anniversary, we decided to work on a simplification of a series of echoes from projects done in the past, linking up for example to Redondo and other sofas which for us represented a sort of cradle or nest. We lowered, we geometrised, we produced purer, cleaner lines and this border, this broken edge came out, this Chamfer, a word used often in architecture where, when we join two lines in a curve, we join them in a chamfer"

Preserving the Eames Dream

The grandson of the design world's most influential husband-and-wife team talks about the joy and responsibility of keeping their design legacy alive
By Melinda Williams

When his university professor pulled up a slide of the now-iconic Eames House in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, during a class, Eames Demetrios recognised it with surprise.
“Hey, that’s my grandparents’ house!” he told his professor. Until that point, it hadn’t occurred to him that the home Charles and Ray Eames designed for themselves was the kind of international icon that would be taught to his fellow students.

Arclinea at Eurocucina 2016

As part of Eurocucina 2016 in Milan, Arclinea celebrated its 90th year,
presenting a new project by Antonio Citterio - Principia

Function and Ritual motivate the design of Principia, highlighting natural materials, innovative production technologies and artisan detailing. A connected, coordinated, beautifully crafted and functional kitchen concept.

Principia merges an antique-look-rough wood with an innovative stainless steel finish. The new development of technological PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) is embedded throughout the design. To find out more click here.

LC Collection 50th Anniversary

Cassina celebrates the 50th anniversary of the LC collection - 1965-2015: a golden anniversary for Italian manufacturer and the masters of 20th Century design.

2015 is an important year to celebrate one of the most significant collections of contemporary design. In 1964, while Le Corbusier and the co-creators were around, Cassina signed the contract to start producing the first four models by Le Corbusier, Jeanneret and Perriand. By choosing Cassina Le Corbusier demonstrated great international recognition of the Italian company's industrial know-how.

Over the years Cassina has developed the LC Collection adding models by the three and other projects that Le Corbusier worked on alone once he had reached full artistic maturity.

Cassina is the only authorised company to produce designs by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand, working in close collaboration with the Le Corbusier Foundation and the heirs of the co-creators. It is vital to fight against imitations and protect the culture of design in order to sustain innovation and quality.

The end to a great year 2014

2014 coming to an end

2014 has been a great year but it is coming to an end, may 2015 be an even greater year for all of us. This year at Matisse we were thrilled to have acquired prestigious brands to add to our extensive portfolio; Poltrona Frau, Brand van Egmond and Vondom all of which are globally recognized not only as design leaders in their specialist fields but for the matchless quality of their materials and workmanship.

Poltrona Frau, established in Italy in 1912, is synonymous with the highest, most exacting standards of leatherwork. For over a century the company has developed from a small workshop producing handcrafted furniture pieces to the company that it is today - one which produces luxury leather interiors for cars (Lamborghini, Ferrari, Jaguar), planes, yachts, cinemas, ships, even the European Parliament in Brussels.  Amazingly, the superb leather quality and hand craftsmanship has survived - machinery is rarely heard in their factory.
